Pompano Park Casino Challenging Seminoles Right To Blackjack

Governor Charlie Crist of Florida took a very proactive approach to the future of casino gambling in his state of Florida. Crist chose to be a pioneer in the efforts to eventually bring full casino gambling to the state.

He signed a compact with the Seminole Indians late last year that would allow the tribe to bring Vegas style slots to their casinos in the state. The other part of that agreement is that the Seminoles would also be allowed to bring blackjack and baccarat to the gamblers of Florida.

There is no doubt that the lawsuit is driven by the possibility of the Isle losing many of their current customers, a fact they even have acknowledged. Pompano Park will, “suffer irreparable injury by loss of customers, revenue, customer goodwill, and competitive standing,” said the lawsuit.

While they claim to be not bitter over the fact that the Seminoles will be allowed the new table games, they came of as such in the lawsuit. “The Seminoles operate six facilities, all within driving distance of Pompano Park. If the Isle at Pompano Park were to operate the same games, our company would face a possible fine and imprisonment, as well as risk our gaming licence,” said the suit.

This is not the first legal fire that the compact has come under. It already is in a battle with House Speaker Marco Rubio over whether the compact violates the Florida Constitution’s separation of power clause.
